一位住在乡村的七旬阿嬷因儿子突然遭遇车祸丧生，独自担负起照顾被儿子收养的七岁孙女的责任。大字不识一个的她希望能在死前看懂儿子身前寄来的信件和日记，为了死后不留下遗憾，她下定决心开始上学。同时，在与小孙女的朝夕相处中，她对小孙女的感情也从原来的排斥、厌恶到最终的难舍难分。当得知儿子身前的同事找到了小女孩的亲属时，她为了能让孩子有更好的生活，决定送走她，并把自己的所有财产都存到了孩子的名下。最后，儿子的同事也被他们之间的亲情所感动，将小女孩留了下来。祖孙俩从此快乐的生活在那个宁静的小山村。
