故事发生在1965年的美国，10岁的女孩查莉（布丽特妮·罗伯森 Brittany Robertson 饰）和身患重病的母亲过着相依为命的日子。一天，一位名为丘奇（艾迪·墨菲 Eddie Murphy 饰）的男人敲响了查莉家的大门，他是来这里照顾这对可怜的母女两的，他的任期很短，只有6个月。然而，丘奇先生在查莉家一待就是六年之久，在他的教导之下，本来毫无目标的查莉开始想要成为一名作家。 母亲去世之后，查莉渐渐和丘奇先生失去了联系，走上了自己的人生道路。在上大学的第二年，查莉发现自己的怀孕了，六神无主的查莉再度想到了丘奇先生，并且敲响了他家的家门。丘奇先生收留了查莉，并且担负起了照顾查莉母女两人的责任。
