十七世纪的日本，正处于德川幕府统治的强盛时期。时为第四代将军家纲（染谷将太 饰）当政，出身围棋世家的安井算哲（冈田准一 饰）在具有高超棋艺之余，还热衷算术和天文。在会津藩藩主保科正之（松本幸四郎 饰）的推荐下，他和一众专业人士展开艰苦而漫长的星象观测之旅。观测结果证明，日本从唐朝引进并一直沿用长达八百年的宣明历已经出现不少的偏差。以位高权重的水户光圀（中井贵一 饰）等武家贵胄为代表，希望借此机会制订一部精确实用的本土历法。然而这项工作不仅艰难浩大，还面临来自京都皇族的压力。长达十数年的博弈，算哲最为跌宕和辉煌的人生…… 本片根据冲方丁的同名小说改编。
