在1989年初秋的柏林，威廉·鲍威列特的家人正在为他庆祝90岁生日。威廉曾是一名抵抗战士，去过国外的他坚信斯大林主义。尽管外面的世界已然山雨欲来，他的妻子夏洛特仍在操持着生日聚会，维护家中的宁静。然而威廉的小孙子萨沙却在这个节骨眼上失踪了——没人能想到萨沙竟然在几天前逃到了西柏林。影片通过萨沙的父亲——历史学家科特的视角徐徐展开，以一个家庭的分崩离析为起点，展示了上世纪80年代末，前东德统治即将结束之时的“末日余辉”。
